DIY Balloon Background Birthday Card

Today I have a fun masking technique to share with you. The balloon background on this card was made using the Balloon Bouquet Punch as a mask and Sponge Daubers to sponge with various colors. You could easily change up the colors used, I might even try it with the new In Colors when I am able to get those, I think that would be a fun color combination for this card.

The sentiment from this card is from the Beautiful Friendship Photopolymer Stamp Set which is carrying over to the new 2020-2021 Annual Catalog. I am so happy about this because this is one of my favorite stamp sets, I use it so much!

Here’s a close-up of the card with the background detail…

You can really do this with any other punch or die you have that you want to turn in to your own background. The possibilities are endless. I like how this technique makes the balloons look like matte balloons. It was really fun, just make sure not to sponge over your template! Make sure you cover your template edges or just be super careful so you don’t have any stray marks.

Here are important things to remember when making your background:

  • Punch out the small balloon from the Balloon Bouquet Punch, make sure you have enough of a border around the balloon so that you don’t have any stray marks when sponging.
  • When using your Sponge Daubers, tap the ink on the paper and then rub it to blend and create that matte balloon look.
  • Start at the top of your background and rotate your colors. When moving to the next line, skip a few colors in your rotation so that the same colors aren’t right next to each other.
