Love Makes the World Brighter – A Waterfront Sympathy Card

It’s sad to say but there are times in life when you need to make a sympathy card for someone. We are currently in Michigan to celebrate the life of my amazing grandfather. He passed away last week after having a stroke back in August. He fought for a long time but ultimately it was his time to be with God. This card is for his wife, my amazing grandmother, who never left his side the entire time he was in the hospital.

My grandparents celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in August and have had a fantastic life filled with love and laughter. They lived in Michigan for most of their lives where they raised 4 children and after my grandfather retired in 1999 they moved to Florida to enjoy their golden years of retirement. They really enjoyed their retirement community and loved meeting so many wonderful friends throughout their life together.

So this card is for my grandmother. I know it can’t possibly fill the void caused by the loss of my grandfather but I hope it brings her some comfort. I am also bringing her favorite Nutella cookies and together I hope these two gifts will make her feel a little bit better.

This card is really versatile and could be used for many other occasions. It would be a great Valentines’ or anniversary card too!

Before we get into how to make the card I want to note that the inks I actually used for this card are mostly retired so I have replaced those colors below with similar colors that are currently available to order.

Here’s how you make the card.

Start with a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ piece of Whisper White Cardstock and burnish with your Bone Folder, set aside.

Next take a 3 3/4″ x 5″ piece of Whisper White Cardstock and put it on top of a scrap piece of paper. Take out your Waterfront Photopolymer Stamp Set and Sponge Daubers and let’s begin creating the image for the front of the card.

Stamp your waves using the mountain shaped stamp in Bermuda Bay. Next use a Sponge Dauber in Bermuda Bay and sponge over the top of your waves. Even though these are the same color, using the sponging method will make the ink appear lighter on your card.

Next make the sand bar by stamping in in Sahara Sand Ink right over your waves. Next for your palm trees, one set on the left and right of your beach, stamp the tree trunks in Early Espresso Ink and the palm tops in Garden Green Ink. Stamp your sun in Pumpkin Pie Ink centering it just above the sand bar.

To make the sunset. Sponge a small portion above the sandbar in Melon Mambo Ink, then the next section above that sponge a strip of Pumpkin Pie Ink and finish the top by sponging in Bermuda Bay again.

For the sentiment, I actually combined two of the sayings and made a new one. I took the Blackberry Bliss Stampin’ Write Marker from the Regals collection and colored the “Love” portion of the saying “Love Never Gives Up” and stamped that at top center. Then I colored the “Makes the World Brighter” portion of “Every Little Kindness Makes the World Brighter” and centered that below the word “Love”. I love using this technique to combine words that go with the stamps to make your own sentiment.

Your scene is now complete. Use your Snail Adhesive to center this on to the front of your card and you’re done! I also stamped a set of palms trees on the front of my envelope for a bit of pizzazz.
